BLEPHAROPLASTY EYELID SURGERY
The eyes have it………
The skin around your upper and lower eyelids may sag, even to the point of obstructing your vision. Fatty deposits may cause puffiness and bags above and below your eyes.
Blepharoplasty or eyelid surgery is a procedure to restore a more youthful and “less tired’ look, by eliminating excessive skin and fat in your upper and lower eyelids. This procedure can also help correct obstructed vision when it is caused by excessive skin and excessive fat from the upper and lower lids. The surgical incisions are placed in the natural skin folds of the eyelids, making them virtually unnoticeable after they have healed.
Blepharoplasty cannot change sagging eyebrows, dark circles, or fine wrinkles around the eyes. Dr. Johnson may recommend other procedures such as skin resurfacing, brow lifts, or a forehead lift. This procedure is many times combined with a “brow lift’ to help remove excessive skin above the brows and to eliminate drooping of the brows. A “forehead lift” may also be considered to eliminate forehead wrinkles and to elevate the brows at the same time. This helps to rejuvenate the upper face and to create a younger, friendlier appearance, by reducing frown lines and raising drooping eyelids.

Whether the procedure is desired for cosmetic or functional reasons, the choice of a qualified facial plastic surgeon is important. Dr. Johnson will perform a complete history and physical examination. He will explain to you what you can expect from the procedure. He will take the time to fully explain the procedure to you and answer each and every question.
In performing an upper blepharoplasty, Dr. Johnson will mark the lines and creases of the lids to keep the scars as invisible as possible along the natural folds. The incision is performed and the excessive skin, fat and muscle are removed. To minimize the visibility of the scar, fine sutures are used. In lower blepharoplasty, Dr. Johnson will make the incision along the lashline and the excessive skin, fat and muscle is removed. When lower eyelid puffiness is caused primarily by excessive fat a “transconjunctival” approach can be taken. This surgical approach is by going through the inside of the lower lid, eliminating a skin incision.
After surgery a moderate amount of swelling and bruising will occur around the eyes. Dr. Johnson will recommend the use of ice packs around the eyes for the first 24-48 hours with elevation of the head of the bed.
