Otoplasty is a procedure for the correction of protruding ears. Children have long been the victims of cruel comments by other children such as “Mickey Mouse” ears and ”Dumbo”. Children are often ridiculed for their ears and can lead to being self-conscious about their appearance and poor adaptation to school.
This surgical procedure can be performed as an adult or a child. When a parent is considering the procedure for their child, a positive attitude is critical. Timing is an important consideration for the procedure. Having an otoplasty at an earlier age is desirable as the cartilage is pliable and is easier to reshape the ear. Also, the child will experience psychological benefit from the aesthetic improvement.
The surgical procedure begins with an incision behind the ear at the crease of the natural fold. Dr. Johnson will remove the cartilage and skin required to obtain the right effect. After sculpting the cartilage to the desired shape, Dr. Johnson will apply sutures to “anchor” the ear to the desired position.
The procedure is performed on an outpatient basis. Bulky dressings are applied to the ears and are removed in 5 to 7 days. The sutures are removed at that time and the scar is hidden in the crease behind the ear.
